En attendant Godot

Waiting for Godot is a play in which two characters, Vladimir (Didi) and Estragon (Gogo), engage in a variety of discussions and encounters while awaiting Godot, who never arrives. His play is a tragicomedy in two acts".

In the first act, two men, Vladimir and Estragon, have met near a leafless tree. Estragon spent the previous night lying in a ditch and receiving a beating from some unnamed assailants. The two men discuss a variety of issues, and it is revealed that they are waiting for a man named Godot. They are not certain if they’ve ever met Godot, or if he will even arrive. Two other characters show up, Pozzo and his slave Lucky, who is headed for the market, where Pozzo intends to sell Lucky. They pause in their journey, as Pozzo engages Vladimir and Estragon in conversation.

Soon a boy shows up and explains to Vladimir and Estragon that he is a messenger from Godot and that Godot will not be arriving tonight, but tomorrow.

The main protagonist in the novel is Malone, an old man who is lying in bed. He doesn't know where he is. Maybe in a hospital or asylum. He only has his workbook, a hat, and a pencil. He is writing a story about Sapo, a boy who when becomes a man, he changes Sapo's name to Macmann.

The majority of the book's text is observational and deals with Malone's existence.
