The unconsoled

Given the writer’s first and last name, I expected the action to take place in the land of the Rising Sun. I was surprised when I realized in the first pages how the plot of the novel takes place in Central Europe.

This is a novel that is read in one breath. Although extensive, the novel is written in a way that is very clear and easy to read. When I started reading this book, I had a feeling I was back in time and reading The Chronicles of Narnia written by Clive Staples Lewis.

The novel describes the arrival of a young, emotionally closed, famous pianist named Ryder in a typical Central European city. Upon arrival, he meets a suitcase carrier at the hotel who tells him the story of his daughter and her son and begs him for a favour. The protagonist encounters many unusual characters who ask him for help and who drag him into a series of events that surpass his ability to comprehend. A mysterious and instructive novel, full of intrigue and unexpected plots.

"It was as if something had exploded in my head, something that was blocking me and preventing me from advancing, something like a dam, and it was as if a whole new spirit had taken over me."

"I saw that he hesitated whether to continue working on the drawing with the danger of ruining everything."
